G.I. Joe and some thoughts on other things

I was catching up on my comic book reading the other day, specifically the trade paperbacks of IDW's G.I. Joe series which I am really enjoying, and I realized that I've never seen a G.I. Joe RPG. Why the hell is there no G.I. Joe RPG? It would totally kick ass. Sure I know I can use everything from d20 Modern to Mutant Epoch to Shadowrun or even Rifts to run a G.I. Joe RPG, but that's not the point. I want an actual G.I. Joe RPG damn it!!!
Hasbro owns G.I. Joe and D&D, so why in the hell hasn't someone said "hey, why don't we make a G.I. Joe RPG" and made my dream a reality. I've enjoyed G.I. Joe since I was a kid. I watched the shows, I even sat through the movie multiple times and  I bought the toys and I still read the comics. (On a related tangent WTF were they thinking putting Marlon Wayans in that movie? Didn't he ruin the D&D movie enough? I'm sure he's a nice guy and to some people he's probably considered funny, but give me a break. Did they really have to make two movies about two properties that I have loved since childhood even worse by adding him?) I know that if they made a G.I. Joe RPG, I'd buy the hell out of those books. I'd really be even more happy if they released it in the Essentials digest format for easy carrying and use.

We went to the drive in over the weekend and saw Harry Potter and Transformer 3.
While I do think the books are way better (they usually are) I am still a fan of the Harry Potter movies. That being said The Deathly Hallows pt 2 was great! My wife and daughter have never read the books and they loved it.
Transformers 3 wasn't as bad as the second one except for Shia LaBeouf. I'm not a huge fan of his but he just came off as a whiny, self involved little bitch in this movie. After I got over wanting to beat him over the head with a bat, I actually started to feel embarrassed for him. His part in the movie was beyond horrible. Actually most of the humans in the movie made me feel embarrassed for them. The Transformers themselves were actually pretty damn cool and their part of the movie was entertaining. The kid-o loved it, but her and her cousin both agreed the people were annoying and the movie would have been better without them.

We also saw the previews for Captain America (awesome!) and Dark Knight (wtf? that made no sense and yes we get it.. its the end, shut up about it already).

I caught the leaked preview trailers for Avengers (double awesome!!) and Amazing Spider-man (meh, don't really care anymore). Both of which are pulled down from the sites where I saw them.

Smurfs (there's nothing wrong with liking the Smurfs, beside NPH is in it so it has to be funny, although he was also in Beastly and that was just bad, bad, bad)

A quick rant about digital magazines, plus more Matrix movies.

I am a pretty big magazine reader. I read at least 20 mags per month (my wife made me cut back) and that doesn't count comics. Of course 3-4 of them are related to my field of study, but the rest are just for fun.

Pretty much every day I have a magazine or comic book in my mailbox and the magazine rack is one of the first places I hit in any store. I actually choose the stores I prefer shop at according to the quality of their magazine racks.

This is one of the reasons I was so upset when WotC canceled both Dragon and Dungeon magazines and moved them to a digital format. I absolutely hate reading digital magazines and until Kobold Quarterly came along they were the only gaming mags I knew about. Though Knights of the Dinner Table did ease the pain of their loss somewhat.

Sure I read quite a few blogs, online news sites and messageboards, but those are usually quick reads meant to grab small bits of info. I use them just to keep up to date on topics I can't always find in magazines. Honestly my online reading pretty much revolves around RPGs, and current comic book news. Everything else I try to get from a print magazine.

Before long it seems like I will be stuck reading damn near everything in digital format or not reading them at all. RPG books, comics, magazines, newspapers are a going digital. 

I don't want to buy a new tablet PC/ipad, e-reader or smart-phone just so I can enjoy my favorite magazines/comics/books. I'm not that old and I stay fairly knowledgeable regarding current technology, but this push to make us slaves to our digital masters (a little melodramatic, I know) not only makes me feel old, but it pisses me off. I don't mind having a choice between print or digital, but I don't like being forced to accept something I don't like or want just keep keep reading the things I enjoy.
 I feel the same way about this push for all movies to be 3-D. I don't $#%^ing want to see movies in 3-D! I want plane old 2-D that I can enjoy without paying an extra $10 per ticket and without wearing those $#%^ed - up glasses.

What was I talking about? Oh, yeah...

Wizard magazine, one of the few comic book magazines that can still be found on the magazine rack in your local grocery, and pretty much every where else,  is apparently ceasing publication along with sister magazine Toyfare. According to the press release at Newsarama, Wizard will become a digital magazine called "Wizard World".

Now I admit that Wizard has not been up to par for quite a while and they have always been a bit selective about which comic/companies were covered, but with hobby magazines quickly disappearing from magazine racks they were kind of the last bastion of geekyness among all of the mainstream mags. All we have left are the few science magazines (as long as they manage not to get hidden behind the latest issue of Rachel Ray), Archie Digest (the last comic book on the rack) and the few remaining video game magazines. I find this very upsetting.

• In case you hadn't heard, according to Slice of Sci-fi who got this from IGN, who were told by Keanu Reeves (I feel like I'm in Middle School again), there are plans to make 2 more Matrix movies. I think everyone agrees that the Matrix trilogy (mostly #2 &3) had some issues and could have been better, but over all I liked them. Though I  freely admit that the parts that were bad, were really really bad, but the parts that were good absolutely kicked ass. So I am kind of torn. Part of me wants to see a new movie and part of me is kind of dreading it.

A little bit of everything

Lately I've been focusing all of my attention on strictly RPGs, and most of that has been focused on Pathfinder or WotC/D&D. So today I've decided to do a post that touches on multiple topics.

RPGs & other games

• I don't know exactly why,but according to RPGNow this is the last month you can buy pdfs of the Cortex system's Battlestar Galactica and Serenity RPGs. Whatever the reason, the pdfs for these games as well as other Cortex games, are on sale. I really like the Cortex system so I grabbed a copy of Six-Shooters and Spaceships for $4.99. The core rules for BSG and Serenity can be yours for $9.99.
• Troll Lord Games is also running a sale on RPGNow for its Castles & Crusades products. If you've been thinking about trying this game, now would be a good time.
• I've honestly never played Runequest, although I've heard good things about it. With pdfs for Runequest II on sale at RPGNow, I may finally give it a try.
• The new Villains and Vigilantes adventure, Infinity Lounge, is now available for free at RPGNow. While you're at it check out the interview with V&V creators Jeff Dee and Jack Herman over at Ain't it Cool News.
• If you haven't played Heroclix in a while, check out some of the cool new stuff coming out from Wizkids.
• I played a few games of Dragon Dice back when TSR released the game in the 90's. I lost track of the game and thought it had disappeared until I recently heard that the game was making a comeback and is currently being produced by SFR. 
• Speaking of dice games, Cthulhu dice by Steve Jackson games is a simple, but fun little game I picked up a few months ago. Zombie Dice is also a lot of fun.

Comic Books

• In response to fan's complaints about the price of comic books and the reported decline in sales DC comics' Drawing the Line at $2.99 goes into effect this month. Nearly all of the monthly comics released by DC are supposed to hold the $2.99 price for the foreseeable future. In response Marvel is reportedly dropping many of its monthly books to the $2.99 price as well. Since I primarily read DC I am happy very happy about this. Of course the 4 - 5 Marvel books I read will probably be the ones that don't see the price drop, but the lower DC prices should make up for it.
• In case you didn't know new issues, as well as back issues of Heroic Publishing's books can be found on Drive-thru Comics or you can order print versions of the books from the company's website. Personally I usually read Flare and Champions, but the other books are pretty good too. 
• I just recently found out that Drive-thru Comics also has a lot of Top Cow books available on their site. 
• While I'm on the Drive-thru Comics kick I recommend picking up the issues of Shi and 2000 AD that are available to download. 
• DC comics is dropping the Comics Code for their own rating system. It's about time.

Movies

• I had some reservations about Seth Rogen playing the Green Hornet, but after seeing the movie this past weekend I have to admit he did a good job. The movie was a lot of fun and Jay Chou kicked ass as Kato. I saw it at an IMAX 3-D theater and even though I'm not a fan of 3-D, I can't deny it was pretty cool. 
• Images of Chris Evans in full Captain America costume have been released. As a life long Cap fan, I can't wait to see this movie.
• The preview for Thor was playing when I went to see Green Hornet and it looks awesome!
• Apparently Bane and Catwoman will be the villains in the next Batman movie. I'm not too keen on the actors chosen for the parts,but everyone said Michael Keaton would suck as Batman and I thought he did a great job.
• After X3 I didn't really care about seeing X-Men: First Class but it is beginning to look promising.
• Jon Favreau apparently won't be directing Iron Man 3. 
• I'm sure everyone knows about the Spider-man movie reboot and while Garfield seems to wear the suit well, I'm just not ready for a reboot.

TV

• I don't know what everyone else thought, but in my opinion the new NBC series The Cape sucked. It definitely showed potential and it could have been an amazing faux Batman tv show, but alas it was a complete disappointment.
• I haven't had the chance to watch them yet but I've heard good things about both The Avengers and Young Justice cartoons.

Where is the Big Budget D&D Movie? - Spinoff Online

There is a pretty good article pondering the same question that many of us gamers have been pondering for years, "why can't they make a good D&D movie", over at Spinoff Online.
The author, Graeme McMillan, makes many of the same points I've seen repeated over and over around the net. The D&D name has almost as much recognition as many other big budget properties like Transformers and Star Trek. Plus there is a built in fanbase waiting for a good film. Why there has been no Lord of the Rings level D&D movie yet is beyond me.
As McMillan writes in the article, since Hasbro owns G.I. Joe and Transformers as well as a movie studio, there really is no reason that this movie isn't being made. Unless it is due to rights disputes or just fear of making another dud. Perhaps because there is no well defined story or characters that are recognizable to non-gamers, like in many other franchises, no one really knows what to do with it.
I'd be happy with a live action Forgotten Realms movie starring everyone's favorite Drow or even a live action Dragonlance movie. Although my personal preference would be an Eberron movie, but it is more likely they'd go with a "classic" D&D setting over Eberron. All I know is I want this movie. Hell, I want 10 of them, but only if they are good.

Iron Man 2: Quick Review

I took the family to the drive-in Saturday night to see the newest Shrek movie and Iron Man 2.
Shrek was pretty much what I expected, a good family movie. There were some really funny parts, a good moral lesson (ala It's a Wonderful Life) and fairly enjoyable. If I didn't have a daughter I probably would  not have seen it, but I don't think it was a waste of money.
As for Iron Man 2, I have mixed feelings. Part of me thought it was absolutely awesome, but I also felt kind of let down. The story seemed to go in too many directions needlessly and there were just too many characters. Favrea played too big of a part in the movie. I just don't think his character was important enough to get as much screen time as he did, it added nothing to the movie. Actually knowing who he is kind of distracted from the story.
Cheadle was great as Rhodey as was Paltrow as Pepper. Downey Jr. made Tony Stark a little to cocky and arrogant for my tastes. It was almost as if he got his billionaires mixed up and was playing Bruce Wayne, the publicly flamboyant and inept alter ego of Batman. Although he got some bad comments from reviewers I liked Sam Rockwell as Justin Hammer. Of course I think Rockwell is one of the most underrated actors when it comes to playing slime-balls.
While everyone seemed to rave about Rourke's character Ivan Vanko I thought the character was dull and uninteresting. I'd rather have seen Rockwell as the primary bad guy who designs and builds an army of armored drones to battle Iron Man and War Machine with Rourke's Whiplash/Crimson Dynamo amalgam removed from the story completely. Scarlett Johanson as Black Widow, while I will never complain about seeing Johanson in skintight black leather, served no real purpose in the movie except as a quasi team up with the chauffeur.
The fight scenes were cool, though they were over too quickly. While it was neat to see War Machine and Iron Man duke it out, that part of the movie seemed forced to me. We all remember how much trouble Stark had learning to use the armor, but Rhodey puts it on and acts as if he has been using it for years. I also thought that Stark build the armor(s) to be powered by the arc reactor in his chest. Since when does he build them with the arc reactors already in place? Otherwise how did Rhodey power the suit? Plus the reason behind why he put on and then stole the armor just seemed wrong to me. Very out of character. They could have come up with something better. Also Stark's illness and miraculous cure, kind of lame and a big time waster.
Over all I liked the movie and will definitely be buying it on DVD. I will also be watching it multiple times as Iron Man is one of my favorite Marvel characters, but I was kind of let down.

Watchmen. Was it worth the wait?

I managed to finally see Watchmen last night and have to admit I was both amazed and disappointed. On one hand the movie stayed incredibly true to the source material, something I applaud the film makers for doing. Yet at the same time I can see that as a fan of the material, it could have been a bit distancing for those not familiar with the original story. Thinking back I, like many others, tend to remember the story fondly and forget that non comic book readers may not get it. The story is pretty deep and requires you to think a little, something too few people are willing to do.
So my final opinion on the film is definitively positive. I thought it was great and I will definitely be buying the extended DVD version. But for someone who doesn't know the characters and the story, I have to admit that it may seem rather dull. The story is kind of slow. If someone goes into this thinking they are getting a movie like X-men, they will probably be disappointed. But for fans, it was definitely worth the 20+ year wait.

I did it! No D&D for me...

With the exception mentioned in my last post, I managed to go through the holidays D&D free and my plan worked. I have found that my little bout of RPG abstinence has left me with a renewed interest in not only D&D, 4e in particular, but gaming in general.
I have campaign ideas seeping out my ears, I can't write them down fast enough. I also have been energized and can't wait to set up a D&D, Hollow Earth Expedition, Dead Reign or Serenity/BSG game. I don't think that it was just the lack of gaming that recharged my batteries, but what I did during my time off. What did I do? Well with the exception of spending a lot of time on my PSP (see previous post) I read some books, surfed the net and watched some movies, all of which I think were contributing factors.
First let's start with the books.
"Hollow Earth: The long and curious history of imagining strand lands, fantstical creatures, advanced civilizations and marvelous machins below the earth's surface" by David Standish and while the title may be long the book itself is just about 300 pages and a pretty quick read. It tells the story of where the idea of hollow earth came from, the real life people who believed in it and tried to find it, what people believed they would find there, as well as the stories written about it. It is a very interesting book which inspired me to do some googling to learn more. The hollow earth is a topic overflowing with gaming potential and I can't wait to get into it.
"World War Z" by Max Brooks is another book I managed to finally finish during this time which has me itching to run Dead Reign or throw a bunch of zombies in my next D&D game. If only they had the Necromancer class up and running.
"Indiana Jones and the Hollow Earth" by Max McCoy is the book I'm reading now which is only feeding my desire to run a hollow earth/pulp game. I can't wait to put some PCs up against Nazis in the center of the earth.
Dreseden Files by Jim Butcher, I actually read two more Dresden novels during this time and am eagerly awaiting the release of the the RPG.
I also managed to fit in a Forgotten Realms novel, Mistshore, and have recently gone back to reread the Campaing Setting so guess where my next D&D game is going to take place.

Next are the movies, most of which were directly linked to the books I was reading in some manner. I watched several Zombie movies, Dagon, Call of Cthulhu, all the Mummy movies (#3 was not my favorite BTW), all of the Indiana Jones movies, Serenity, past seasons of BSG, Tombstone (I'm your Huckleberry), and all six Star Wars during this time.
Between the books, the great blogs on RPGBN, and movies I actually had time to enjoy gaming. I know that sounds weird given that I didn't do any, but it did help. I think it was the fact I was able to step back and just be a geek, a fan and not have to worry about coming up with any content. I didn't do many posts on the Gazette so I was able to just be a fanboy for a while. I didn't even do more than an handful of posts on the various RPG forums. I just blocked out all the bad and concentrated on the fun parts of being a gaming geek. The things that attracted me to gaming in the first place.
This may not work for everyone, but I have to say that taking a break worked wonders for me. I'm more jazzed about everything, including 4e, than I have been in a long time. I've also managed to decide on which systems I want to run regularly, a dilema that has plagued me for a while now. For the forseeable future the primary game systems will be D&D 4e, Serenity/BSG, Mutants & Masterminds, Dead Reign and Hollow Earth Expedition. I realized that I spend so much time trying to find systems that had the things I wanted I was overwhelming myself with games. Granted many were very good, but these are the ones I think that offer everything I want to do. I plan to cut back all my gaming purchases to just these systems/games, which I realized cover nearly everything I could want to run. Well maybe with the exception of Dresden Files when it comes out, but that's it.
It's good to be back.

Also I would like to mention the great reviews done by Kurt Wiegel, nearly all of which I have watched over the past month. If you haven't checked out his vidoes on YouTube you definitely should. The reviews are great and give you just about everything you need to know about the games he covers before buying.

Every holiday my family and I get a stack of movies together that celebrate the spirit of the season and watch them in the weeks leading up to the holiday. Fan Films

Like most people around the world, I love movies. I watch everything from low budget B-flicks to mega million dollar Hollywood productions. While a lot of them have not been gems, I continue to watch, hoping to find my new favorite movie.

I started collecting movies when I was around 12 years old and have amassed nearly 5,000 of them in the past 20 something years. However my collection is growing at a much slower rate lately. Between having a family, school, gas prices and the fact that so many of the movies produced today are just sub par, I have become very choosy about which movies I buy or rent. While the big budget movies coming out of Hollywood these days may have incredible FX, a great many of them are poorly written and a lot of the acting is worse than you would see in a bad B-flick. Don’t even get me started on how bad the B-flicks have gotten. Just as I was becoming more and more jaded about the whole of cinema I was introduced to a new viewing experience, fan films.

Many of these short films have better writing and acting than a lot of the stuff the big studios churn out. Fan Films are a labor of love for most of the people that take the time to make them. Who in the world would make a Blue Beetle short other than a true fan? Well Blinky Productions has done several shorts with Blue Beetle, including the hilarious Blue and Gold PSA. Now before you get the wrong impression Blinky Production isn’t just limited to using Blue Beetle and Booster Gold. If you check out their website, Youtube or countless other fan film sites that feature their shorts, you will see films starring Powergirl, The Flash, Michael Meyers, Hourman, The Question, and many more. Perhaps because I am a Blue and Gold fan from way back I am a bit biased when I say the fan films put out by Blinky Productions are some of my favorites, but don’t just take my word for it, check them out.

While fan films cover a wide range of topics, I tend to search out the Star Wars and Superhero shorts. Some of them have production values that would stand up to anything done in Hollywood, especially some of the Star Wars fan films. There are numerous sites where you can find fan films, just put fan films in your search engine and you’ll see, but I have a few that I frequent and personally think are the most user friendly.

Rifts Movie

According to a recent ICv2 article, the studio is going to decide whether to proceed with the Rifts movie based on the newest version of the script being written by Rawson Marshall Thurber. I for one would love to see a good movie made from this property. Even if you don't like the system, you have to admit the Rifts world is an amazing setting. I enjoy just reading the books for inspiration in my other games. Rifts is an epic setting with an infinite amount of potential stories.Done properly a Rifts movie could be one of the best Sci-fi/Fantasy films to come out since Lord of the Rings.

DC has high hopes for Watchmen

With the Watchmen trailer running before the mega hit The Dark Knight, interest in the Watchmen graphic novel is running high. Watchmen pretty much maintains the spot as number one selling graphic novel, but the recent resurgence of interest prompted DC to print another million or so copies. Apparently they are expecting interest in the movie to drive sales of the graphic novel through the roof. I for one hope they are right. I also hope the movie, which looks incredible in the trailer, will do justice to one of my all time favorite graphic novels.
Interest is so strong that there is even an "animated" version of the graphic novel being released in installments on itunes.

Now more than anytime I can remember interest movies that Geeks will like is at an all time high. I've been searching the net for trailers and found some pretty good ones. There are definitely a bunch of movies that I will be seeing over the next year or so.

Summer Movies

What would summer be if Hollywood didn't throw its biggest and best, well at least biggest, blockbusters at us. This year's crop of Summer releases actually looks to be promising. There are more than enough geeky movies coming out this summer, actually in all of 2008, to help insure that our delicate skin maintains its pasty whiteness.

• Iron Man- playing now: If you haven't seen this stop reading now and go see it!
• Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull- playing now: I've heard mixed reviews on this one. I'll wait for the DVD.
• The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian- playing now
• Speed Racer- out now: I'll pass
  
• The Happening- June 13th: Can M. Night Shyamalan recapture the success of Sixth Sense? The trailer looks pretty good.
• The Incredible Hulk-June 13th: It can't be as bad as the last one... can it?
  
• Get Smart- June 20th: Missed it by that much...
  
• Wanted- June 27th
• Hancock- July 2nd: I want to see this one. The trailer looks pretty funny, but they took it back for reediting to get a PG-13 rating which probably does not bode well this close to release.
  
• Hellboy II- July 11th: If it is half as good as the first one it will still be awesome.
  
• Dark Knight- July 18th: This may be the king of the summer. Everyone will want to see Ledger's last full movie. I've even heard talk of an Oscar nomination and no one has seen the movie!
  
• X-files: I Want to Believe- July 25th: This probably has no chance against Dark Knight, but I want to believe this will be better than the series finale, really I do.
• The Mummy 3- August 1st: Jet Li as the new kung fu Mummy! Brendon Fraser doesn't stand a chance.
  
• Star Wars: The Clone Wars- August 15th: The Lucas juggernaut rolls on
